Considerable lobbying on the Hewitt Committee by Roger Howard (Merchant Taylors) supported by Sam Smale (Haileybury) pesuaded the Committee to resurrect a formal scratch foursomes plate competition and the AGM authorised a 3 year trial period starting in 2001. The weather in the first year was appalling so it was particularly gratifying to find that Charterhouse, surprisingly ousted from the main competition in the first round, supported and won the inaugural plate competition. In its second year, only 3 schools of the 32 knocked out in the first round failed to compete in the Hewitt. When word got back to one headmaster that his school's opponents had failed to put up a team, the headmaster promptly called his opposite number and demanded an explanation. And so it seems that the Plate is here to stay.
