Best Grafton Morrish Performances

Without a doubt, our finest performance was in 1976 when we beat Sedburgh 3/0 in the final. The team that year was:

1JE Everitt & CE Holroyd 2 JS Howlett & PR Royle 3  DR Royle & S Smale Click on the picture for a larger version

The year was particularly notable for several reasons

We only qualified at the last moment because a team failed to show up at another qualifying venue and therefore our qualifying venue was entitled to one additional team in the finals
In the semi-final, we were in deep trouble. The score was one game all with Holroyd and Everitt 2 down on the 16th tee at Hunstanton (a tricky par 3). To make matters worse, the opposition (St Edwards) had just struck a superb tee shot to about 10 feet from the hole and it looked like the best we could hope for was to be dormie 2 down.
Holroyd rose magnificently to the occasion and, to the everlasting disbelief of all involved, holed a full 4 iron to get the match back to 1 down with 2 to play. The St Edwards pair were so shattered that Haileybury were not required to complete either of the last two holes and we duly squeezed through 2/1
At the prize giving, the silver winners medals had failed to turn up so Peter Morrish solemnly presented each member of the team with a beer mat.
And finally the teams thanks go to Shirley and Jimmy Detterding, our local mascots who entertained us to a memorable evening's celebrations.
So memorable was the event that the team celebrated the 25th anniversary of the victory with a dinner in London organised by Ted Holroyd and attended by all the team and also by Peter Morrish. Click on the picture for a larger version
